Democrats were conservative in this era????

Andy Jackson who pretty much was the biggest democrat of the era acted more liberally than anybody. He done away with the national bank and pretty much wanted to govern like a king.

You must remember that Lincoln and the northerners werent exactly against slavery. They didnt mind it in the south as long as it stayed in the south and didnt spread. It was kind of like you do what you want to just dont bring it near me or my mine.

Really the North was against cheap labor that put them at a disadvantage in the market to sell goods.

Very true, most of the northerners were merchants and business men. But that basically was ther outlook though, just keep slavery in the south, nowhere else.

1) Democrats of the 1860's were very conservative in regard to the slavery issue. Most democratic legislators voted against the 13th Amendment.

2) Additionally, Jacksonian era democrats were ardent supporters of the slavery institution. Jackson himself was a planter and slaveowner, and he realized that Democrats would have southern support as long as they protected slavery. The republican party, however, did not exist in the 1830's. The second two-party system consisted of the Whigs and Jacksonian democrats. This system was aligned on an interregional basis and allowed the nation to develop several compromises over the slavery issue. The destruction of the second two-party system occurred when the Whig Party fell apart due to internal deficiencies. This allowed the Republicans to emerge as an alternative to the Democrats in the North.

3) Jackson was a strict constructionist, and felt that a national bank represented an illegal concentration of political power. It seems that the elimination of a national bank constitutes conservative behavior, because Jackson wouldn't acknowledge the constitutionality of the national government's ability to implement a progressive agenda that helped the private sector to develop additional economic infrustructure.

4) Lincoln thought that slavery was morally reprehensible, but he assured southerners that he would not try to end slavery. Lincoln issued the emancipation proclamation in 1863 in order to hinder Southern economic production. His motives were more or less tactical in nature. The Emancipation Proclamation had no legal effect in the South, and slavery could not be officially eliminated until the war was over and a constitutional amendment was put into effect.

All that information you posted is accurate. You seem to want to decorate all of you posts with a broad vocabulary I guess in an attempt to impress some but Im not impressed. I guess you could view Jackson's acts against the Cherokee indians somewhat conservative and his stand on slavery some what conservative. The views of Republicans and Democrats have changed alot over 100 years but IMO at that time Jackson was more liberal than conservative. The democrats of the Jacksonian age were more relegiously open which would put the way to the left in these times, they thought the bank only benefited rich people and hurt the poor people, thats more to the democrats side in these times. Its somewhat difficult to compare because the issues of today are much different than the issues then.

Anyone want to mention the draft riots and the "buying of a substuite" for 300 bucks by the rich in the north to keep the poor boys in the war and the rich kids home? [img]/LDPforum/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif[/img]

i usually try to hold off on politics on here but pvhoo or what ever your name is rick boucher is the sorriest man to ever walk in southwest Va he has you people right where he wants people like you he makes you think he done al these great things for this area but it is usually the lower down people like town council, mayor, BOS, ect. he just takes the credit. but you all just keep on doing what you are doing and southwest VA won't be here much longer.
